Your circadian rhythm is part of the body's roughly 24-hour timing system. It helps organize sleepiness and alertness in relation to day and night. It is different from the shorter cycles of non-REM and REM sleep that repeat while you sleep.

A daily clock, not a 90-minute cycle

NIGMS describes circadian rhythms as daily patterns affecting sleep, hormones, temperature and other functions. Light and darkness are particularly important cues. A coordinating clock in the brain helps align the body's rhythms with the outside day.

A sleep cycle describes progression through sleep stages during a sleep episode. Circadian timing helps influence when that episode is likely to happen. Adding enough 90-minute blocks to a schedule does not establish that the chosen bedtime matches your body clock.

Sleep pressure also matters

NHLBI describes a drive for sleep that builds while you are awake, alongside signals linked to the day-night cycle. These influences work together. Having been awake a long time and reaching your usual sleepy part of the day are related considerations, but they are not the same thing.

How light and regularity help

Daily light exposure helps set the timing system. Bright artificial light late in the evening can signal wakefulness. A reasonably consistent wake time, time outdoors during the day when practical, and quieter, dimmer evenings can support a workable routine.

For a typical daytime schedule, avoid making weekdays and days off entirely different sleep schedules. If you need an earlier start, make the evening routine and sleep opportunity earlier too. These are general habits, not a prescription for precisely timed light therapy or melatonin.

Timing preferences differ

People do not all become sleepy at the same clock time. Age also affects timing patterns; adolescents often face a mismatch between later sleep timing and early school starts. See teen sleep guidance rather than applying an adult early-wake schedule to a teenager. Adults can use adult duration guidance alongside their schedule.

Shift work and travel across time zones can create a mismatch between the external schedule and the body clock. Advice intended for someone sleeping at night may not fit a rotating shift. Persistent difficulty fitting sleep around work is worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
