A watch immediately shows destination time. The body clock does not necessarily follow that quickly. Avoid treating the first local bedtime as proof that your circadian rhythm is already aligned.

Why light timing needs more than a compass direction

NIOSH explains that light can shift timing in opposite directions depending on when it reaches the circadian system. Morning and evening in those explanations refer to an established biological schedule. After a large time-zone change, local morning may not correspond to biological morning.

CDC's travel guidance therefore ties light timing to travel direction and time zones crossed. Advice to seek bright light every morning, regardless of the journey, is too broad. This guide explains the distinction but does not calculate exposure or avoidance windows for a particular itinerary.

Before departure and during the flight

  • Protect sleep before travel rather than starting the trip already short of rest.
  • If practical, begin moving bedtime and wake time toward the destination schedule over the preceding days.
  • Plan opportunities to sleep in transit when it will be nighttime at the destination.
  • Keep water available and avoid excess alcohol; an eye mask or earplugs may help create a quieter sleep opportunity.

These preparation steps draw on NHS travel advice. They cannot guarantee a comfortable flight or prevent all jet lag. For a very short trip, maintaining more of the home schedule may be practical instead of adapting twice.

After arrival: protect sleep without promising instant adjustment
