REM timing cannot be predicted exactly from bedtime alone
REM means rapid eye movement sleep. It is one of the two broad phases of sleep, alongside non-REM sleep. Sleep studies classify these phases by measuring signals such as brain activity and eye movement. A web calculator does not have those measurements, so it cannot know when your REM period begins or ends.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says sleep cycles commonly restart every 80 to 100 minutes and that most people complete four to six cycles in a night. The pattern changes as the night progresses: deep non-REM sleep is more concentrated earlier, while REM sleep generally occupies more time later.
Why “wake at the end of REM” is too precise
The popular 90-minute rule treats every cycle as identical. Real cycles vary between people and within the same night. Time to fall asleep, brief awakenings, stress, illness, alcohol, medications, age, and sleep disorders can all change the schedule.
That means a calculated cycle boundary is not proof that REM has just ended. It is simply a clock time produced from a chosen cycle-length assumption.
