Key answer
REM means rapid eye movement sleep. It is a recurring sleep phase associated with active brain patterns and dreaming, distinct from deep non-REM sleep. You usually spend more time in REM later in the night, but there is no universal clock time when REM begins or ends.
What happens during REM?
According to NHLBI, the eyes move rapidly and measured brain activity resembles some activity seen while awake. Most muscles normally become very relaxed, helping keep dreams from becoming physical actions. This combination distinguishes REM from the slower brain-wave pattern that defines deep non-REM sleep.
Sleep supports learning and long-term memory, but reducing those benefits to a single stage or a target REM percentage oversimplifies the night. Feeling rested also depends on adequate duration, continuity and timing. A calculator does not assess these physiological processes.
When does REM occur?
REM appears as sleep cycles repeat. Earlier parts of the night generally contain more deep non-REM sleep; later portions generally contain longer periods of REM. That pattern is a broad tendency, not a schedule you can assign to exact minutes after getting into bed.
Going to bed is not the same event as falling asleep. If sleep begins later than expected, or you wake in the night, a timetable based only on bedtime cannot follow those changes. Age and the pattern of that particular night's sleep matter too.
Can you set an alarm for the end of REM?
You can set an alarm for a clock time. You cannot establish from a 90-minute calculation that REM will have ended at that instant. Clinical sleep staging uses measured signals such as brain activity and eye movements. SnoozeCalc receives none of those signals.
Nor does the calculator demonstrate that waking from REM is always better than waking from another stage. Its purpose is to compare possible sleep opportunities. The article on choosing a wake time around REM estimates addresses that practical question in more detail.

Protect enough sleep opportunity rather than shortening the night to hit a supposed REM boundary. For duration context, use sleep guidance for adults or the age group relevant to you. A regular schedule and adequate sleep matter more than making one stage fit a formula.
If you regularly remain very sleepy despite allowing sufficient sleep, discuss that pattern with a healthcare professional. Dream recall, a single morning's grogginess or a calculator result cannot by itself diagnose a REM problem.
